March Madness

I can't believe March is almost over . . . and that Owen will be 5 weeks old tomorrow. How time flies! The little guy had his one month check-up on Monday - he's healthy and happy, and weighed in at 10 lbs 15 oz.

Rolling Over

I was catching up on some chores this morning, and had Owen on his tummy next to me. He did a few baby push-ups and then rolled over! I decided to see if it was a fluke and rolled him back on this tummy - he repeated his feat two more times, which seemed like enough trials to move us out of the realm of chance. Is it too esoteric to assign a p-value to your child's behavior?

Charlie Update

Charlie is adjusting fairly well to being a big brother. We've definitely had a few temper tantrums here and there, but he mostly just wants to hold and love on Owen. It's been a big help to have him in preschool during the day - he has a chance to run around and play with his buddies, and we have a chance to catch up on our sleep!

Here are a few photos from his various outings with the grandparents over the past two weeks, and a few quotables:

In reference to life changes . . .
"Just like Mr. Miserable - he used to be miserable, but then he became happy. His life changed!"

After a disappointing bathroom trip . . .
"That was technically the smallest poop in the whole world."

When he's done holding Owen . . .
"Can someone please get Owen off of me?"

While "reading" to Owen . . .
"See, Owen, this is the front cover, and this is the spine. Here is the back cover, where the bar code is."

Two Weeks

Owen his celebrating his 2-week birthday today with more sleeping and eating. We just had a visit from our midwife, and the chunk is now 9 lbs 6 oz. He's been doing really well, and treated us to a few nights of 4-5 hour stretches of sleep, and has been awake more during the day. Here are a few photos from the past 2 weeks.

Owen's birthday cake - Charlie and I made the cake part while I was in early labor, and then he and Omi finished it up. He was insistent that the icing be green, and that the cake have cherries on top. Needless to say, it looks a little grotesque - but was very delicious.

Guess Who?

We've been getting lots of questions about whether the boys look alike. So here's a little who's who quiz, both pictures are from when the boys were about 1 week old.

Photo #1 is of Charlie, #2 is of Owen. Definitely a family resemblance, although depending on the angle and their facial expressions, the degree of likeness varies. We feel like the big difference is in their chins - Owen's is a little pointier, and his face seems a little slimmer. It'll be interesting to see what happens as time goes on!

Backtracking - Of Sledding and Snowballs

I meant to post this a while ago, and was reminded to do so yesterday since it snowed . . . again. These pictures are from Valentine's Day weekend, when it also snowed and we took Charlie sledding at our neighborhood park.

Thinking hard . . . how can we have global warming AND unprecedented snowfall?

Owen Michael

After much anticipation, Owen Michael became the latest branch on our family tree early this morning. He was born at 2:50 am, weighed 9 lbs 2 oz and was 21 1/2 inches long. He is darling, and we just adore him.

While my labor was relatively short (~5 hours), getting it started was another matter entirely. My water broke Thursday morning at 7:30 am, and things didn't really get moving until about 10 pm Friday night. (NB: If you need tips on how to induce labor naturally, give me a shout.) By 1 am I was happily in the tub and ready to get this little one on the outside. Evan was his usual amazing self, so much so that our team of midwives and I have coined him the Man Doula.
